Few structures have as much influence over the body as the brain and spinal cord that make up the craniosacral and central nervous systems. The fluid surrounding these structures called cerebrospinal fluid, nourishes and protects the brain and spinal cord from injury. In a healthy body this fluid flows freely up and down the spinal column. However this flow can be disrupted by injury or disease resulting in pain and illness throughout the body.

Developed by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger, cranio-sacral (or cranial-sacral) therapy is an effective, hands-on approach that releases tension deep within the body by utilizing gentle pressure and manipulation to the head, neck and back. In doing so, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid is improved allowing blockages which can impact the central nervous system to release.

Using a very light touch, your therapist tunes into the subtle fluid motions of the body as a whole, and specifically, the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid releasing restrictions deep within the body's connective tissues.

This very relaxing, even meditative approach can be effective in treating concussions, chronic pain and migraines, as well as anxiety disorders and digestive issues, among others. CST can be used as a complementary technique during a massage treatment, or can be used on its own where the patient can remain fully clothed on the table.
